Dom's view on education

Education stands on the precipice of a once-in-a-multi-generation change. Profoundly disruptive technologies like AI – whilst occupying everyone's attention – loom very large as a force of change, but the truth is generative and agentic AI is just the tip of the transformation iceberg. A combination of socio-political change, challenges in declining academic standards, issues with attracting and retaining the right teaching talent, shifting (and often problematic) dynamics in parental engagement, huge funding pressure and fundamental questions about the role of education itself combine to mean we are now asking some of the biggest and most important questions of education we have ever asked.

And in the middle of it all, from primary education through to higher and further learning, are the educators, leaders and administrators tasked with figuring out how to deliver in this most trying of times. That's YOU… and truly, it's no small ask!

“Dom's passion is contagious and he speaks the right language to effect real behaviour change.”
Charles Darwin University

Dom Thurbon has spent two decades working deeply with the education sector both in Australia and overseas. Through his large-scale education and behaviour change programs at Karrikins Group, he and his team worked with over 50,000 teachers and more than a million students across Australia, New Zealand, North America, Europe and Asia – in over four thousand schools. His diverse work has spanned areas as broad as: working with the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership on the launch of the National Professional Standards for Teachers; working with individual schools, TAFEs and universities on strategy and planning; founding Educator Impact, a for-purpose business that provided teacher and student mental health measurement tools to schools; working with public and private sector education associations and departments to help school leaders respond to change; and designing and delivering programs for students in areas as diverse as cyber safety, digital literacy, road safety, financial capability and disability.

Whether it's engaging and inspiring a room of educators to own the future of education, working with education leaders to craft strategies that stand the test of time, or designing behaviour change interventions that help address wicked problems – Dom's work in education has been the highlight of his career. He would truly love to join you at your next event and help create an experience that is as inspiring and dynamic as it is informative and practical.

Presentations for educators at all levels

Dom builds every presentation for your event from research into your industry and a briefing with your team. Each one can run as a keynote, a workshop or both.

From managing change to making change: taking ownership of the future of education

Whether it's technological disruption, generational and social change (in and out of classrooms!), political volatility, shifting parental expectations or attracting the next generation of educators – education leaders at all levels are leading, learning and living through profound change.

But whilst at times it feels like these things are happening to us, the truth is: the future is not a place we are going, it's a place we are creating. In this dynamic, practical and uplifting presentation we will:

  • unpack the four forces of change reshaping the face of education at all levels, including AI and emerging technology, generational and social change (both inside and outside the classroom), economic and political volatility and demographic change
  • examine the basic human responses to change that everyone in your school, TAFE or university (including YOU!) will experience as we navigate this rapidly changing world
  • look at a simple toolkit for shaping our response, moving from "change is happening to me" to "I have the power to shape the future", including practically applicable strategies that can be deployed in organisations to improve how we show up in times of change

Education in the misinformation age: truth, trust, transparency and the future of education

We are no longer living in the information age, but rather the misinformation age. Everywhere you look, a combination of new media, social technology, AI and rapidly shifting political and social environments are combining to mean the line between "fact" and "fiction" has never been more blurred. We truly are drowning in a sea of misinformation – across all domains.

For instance, false information about just ONE topic (the hot-button issue of ADHD) has been shared over one billion times this year alone, just on TikTok. And 49% of teachers say they don't know how to stop kids cheating and plagiarising using AI.

This has critical implications for education. The fundamental role of education is to effectively prepare students to navigate the world after school. So, what does it mean when the defining feature of that world is that it's harder than ever to know what's real and true, and what isn't?

Dom Thurbon literally wrote the book on trust and truth in the 21st century – his latest book, To Be Honest…, looks at the rise of the misinformation age, what's causing it, and how we go about using simple tools to rebuild trust.

So, in this inspiring, practical and provocative presentation he will:

  • look at the causes and drivers of misinformation and disinformation – why it's problematic, and where it comes from
  • unpack what this means practically for educators at all levels who are trying to build critical thinking and discernment in their students
  • examine what this means from a team and organisational perspective, and how connecting to truth drives innovation, change and performance
  • explore a toolkit for "making truth happen" in our classrooms, schools and universities
